Disclaimer:
And just so you know... Milkmuny has no direct affiliation with the brands we make our product from. And we’re not here to run down anyone for making paper cartons because they’re certainly better than plastic. It’s just that America produces more than 510,000 tons of these every year and sadly less than .5% of these ever get recycled because most municipalities don’t have the equipment in place to do so. We just want to do our part to get them recycled, help create a cool fund raising opportunity for some great non-profits and then help spread the good word about recycling.
Milk and juice cartons CAN actually be recycled, however, according to an EPA report of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste), in 2006, 510,000 tons of milk cartons were generated in the United States and less than 0.05% (5,000 tons) were recycled. Only a little more than 550 towns across the country recycled milk cartons (source: Organic Valley). Why? According to Ed Skernolis, Policy and Program Director for the National Recycling Coalition, “Milk cartons, because of the wax lining, are not universally recycled. Each locality is different, depending on their recycling processing capability”
